Strategic Plan 2000

Objective Three

Maximize the talent available to the School and society by creating a learning environment that affords students of diverse backgrounds every opportunity for achieving success.

Actions
    • • Utilize the historical strength in the diversity of students in the School (context: current enrollment is 38% female, 15% underrepresented minorities) to lead in multicultural issues in engineering by

    • —increasing retention and success of all our students
—increasing the percentages of our undergraduates, of all backgrounds, continuing to graduate studies (see goals associated with Objective 1)
—increasing the recruitment of a diverse graduate-student population and promoting their success (see actions associated with Objective 1)
—continuing to recruit and develop a diverse faculty (see Objective 6)

    • • Strengthen existing partnerships and create new ones with both historically minority and women's colleges and universities

    • • Support the implementation of programs and policies that improve the ability to balance work, study, and family. These include -

    • — providing high-quality on-campus child-care
      — improving the absolute and perceived level of campus safety.

    • • Increase the diversity on the School External Advisory Board

    • • Utilize campus resources (e.g., CEISMIC) to coordinate and leverage our outreach programs to local K-12 schools for exposure of the discipline

Goals

  • • All students entering the School graduate with their desired degree.

    • • Be a recognized leader in educating women and minority graduates in Chemical Engineering at all degree levels
